Dall’1 al 3 settembre, in occasione del Labor Day Weekend, a New York torna uno dei più importanti festival musicali della scena globale: Electric Zoo. Giunto alla sua quattordicesima edizione, dal 2009 questo evento ha innovato e cambiato il modo in cui vengono concepiti i grandi raduni legati alla musica elettronica, facendo leva su una attenta e riconoscibile identità artistica e scenografica, oltre che su un programma musicale sempre all’avanguardia.
Electric Zoo si svolge a Randall’s Island Park, un parco urbano di 195 ettari situato su un’isola nel cuore di New York City. Nel corso dei tre giorni, il parco si trasforma in un luogo dall’atmosfera futuristica e cyberpunk che accoglie oltre 100.000 partecipanti. Sull’area del festival, che quest’anno è stata ampliata per accogliere cinque palchi anziché quattro, si alternano oltre 80 DJs.
Ogni anno, la direzione artistica individua un tema che definisce l’identità scenografica e illuminotecnica dell’evento: una scelta che nel tempo è stata seguita da altri organizzatori e che ha promosso una forte competitività creativa nel settore. L’edizione di quest’anno si chiama Hyperspace ed è un riferimento all’intelligenza artificiale (AI), una innovazione tecnologica che sta influenzando anche l’industria del design, della luce e della archittetura.
Gli organizzatori raccontano che, attraverso il concetto di hyperspace, vogliono rendere l’esperienza per i partecipanti ancora più immersiva e coinvolgente, al punto che “l’AI sarà integrata in quasi tutti gli aspetti del festival”. La produzione, per il momento, non svela ulteriori dettagli su come questo concetto è stato applicato al design dei palchi, delle luci e delle scenografie.
Per l’edizione 2023 farà il suo debutto anche un nuovo stage, MegaMirage, una produzione ambiziosa e imponente, che, stando agli organizzatori, è in grado di alzare l’asticella delle produzioni audiovisive immersive. Questo palco sarà situato in una nuova area nascosta del festival, che avrà entrate e uscite dedicate. MegaMirage stato concepito dai creativi di Avant Gardner, il gruppo che produce l’intero festival e che ha realizzato anche The Brooklyn Mirage, una delle arene per concerti all’aperto più iconiche e famose di New York.
Negli anni, Electric Zoo si è distinto per la propria capacità di stare al passo con i cambiamenti dell’industria dell’intrattenimento, proponendo un programma musicale sempre ricco e variegato e in grado di interpretare di volta in volta il tema creativo dell’evento. Un’ulteriore novità che caratterizza questa edizione è l’introduzione di sei stage curators (curatori del palco): artisti responsabili non solo della selezione musicale, ma anche delle performance degli altri DJ e in generale dell’identità creativa dello stage.

Electric Zoo brings to New York a new, immersive festival experience

From 1 to 3 September, on Labor Day Weekend, one of the most important music festivals on the global scene returns to New York: Electric Zoo. Now in its fourteenth year, since 2009, this event has innovated and changed how large electronic music gatherings are conceived, relying on a careful and recognisable artistic and scenic identity, and a cutting-edge line-up.
Electric Zoo takes place at Randall’s Island Park, a 195-hectare urban park located on an island in the heart of New York City. Over the course of three days, the park is transformed into a place with a futuristic, cyberpunk atmosphere that welcomes over 100,000 participants. More than 80 DJs perform on the festival grounds, which have been expanded to accommodate five stages instead of four this year.
Each year, the artistic direction identifies a theme that defines the scenic and lighting identity of the event: a choice that has been followed by other promoters over time and that fostered positive, creative competitiveness in the sector. This year’s edition is called Hyperspace and is refers to artificial intelligence (AI), a technological innovation influencing every industry, including design, lighting and architecture.
The organisers say that through the concept of hyperspace, they want to make the experience for participants even more immersive and engaging, to the point that “AI will be integrated into almost every aspect of the festival.” For the time being, the production does not reveal further details on how this concept has been applied to the design of the stages and lighting.
For the 2023 edition, a new stage, MegaMirage, will make its debut. It is an ambitious and impressive production that, according to the organisers, can raise the bar for immersive audiovisual productions. This stage will be located in a new hidden area of the festival, which will have dedicated entrances and exits. MegaMirage was conceived by the creatives at Avant Gardner, the group that produces the entire festival and also created The Brooklyn Mirage, one of New York’s most iconic and famous venues.
Over the years, Electric Zoo has distinguished itself for its ability to keep up with the changes in the entertainment industry, offering a music programme that is always rich and varied and capable of interpreting the creative theme of the event from time to time. A further novelty in this edition is the introduction of six stage curators: artists responsible not only for the musical selection but also for the performances of the other acts and the creative identity of the stage.
